Shame, he never really got his big break.

    • Philly_Cheese says:

He actually did a couple times… First was brought into TNA to begin with, second he was pushed several times. The problem was he lacked as far as his abilities to speak, although he could get the crowd behind him. If he actually wasn't so overly devoted to this gimmick, and didn't seem so forced when he spoke he might have gotten over. Simply put his lackluster ability to cut promos killed his run in TNA.

      • Bigmike885 says:

i dont buy that..AJ cant really cut a promo..neither could Beniot..but they both got over on talent..this guy just isnt that great..

        • Philly_Cheese says:

AJ isn't the greatest at promos like you said, but he does have in-ring abilities, those far above what Elijah Burke has. Also AJ isn't overly devoted to a gimmick and has the ability adjust be it face or heel. Pope's character was, well overly gimmicky, and lets face it kinda dull. The bigger problem is the fact that he was overly devoted to that gimmick, if he made a few slight changes and wasn't so over the top it could've been believable.

Benoit is a whole other story, he had incredible in ring talent, some of which I can only put on the same level of some incredible talents such as kurt angle. Benoit also had a believable gimmick, and I personally believe if the crowd can't believe it how do you expect it to work? You can't be over the top and not expect people to look at you and say "that's corny".

  2. tna24 says:

damn a good talent that never really got his shot, because of injures

  3. purpmuffins says:

Fine with me. Roster is packed with great talent, and there's limited amount of tv time to go around. Still, I'll kind of miss him. Next mr Anderson?

    • toddmikki says:

The Pope was one of the greatest in TNA, its a shame he could have easily been a legend if used properly.

      • tna24 says:

one of the greatest? a few years dont make you a great. the dude had some moments but he wasnt a tna great. you get that when you been there for years like roode and styles

      • Philly_Cheese says:

The problem is that he's not all that great on the mic, mid-card quality at best. His abilities in the ring are outstanding. Also he's very known for being a little full of himself and very arrogant, although that can be a good quality it can cause you to be disliked backstage, while will hold you back.

    • ariesstormjoe says:

thats whats cost them being able able to keep him imo. amount of tv time.

the talent that arent involved in a long storyline or on tv constantly gets shelved. tna could really do with having a 2nd show to still be able to use talent even if they arent going to use them properly. but then other storylines end then they can use the talent that would usually be at home on their A show again.

mr anderson is back on tv now so i doubt he'll be going anywhere for next couple years but then he'll be hanging it up if quotes from a past interview ring true.

  4. Treck says:

I agree with Philly Cheese. His promos were very week. I mean all he will be remembered for is saying the pope is pimping. And the Devon storyline. Now watch it be a swerve as he will be with aces and eights lol

  5. Stunner says:

In my Ron Simmons voice ” DAMN” SMH

  6. Dante_Cross says:

One thing that gets me is when Punk said the worst opponent he has ever gotten in the ring with was Elijah Burke (The Pope), but yet he seemed to be doing pretty well when working in TNA and even you guys have said he has pretty good wrestling qualities, better than the average WWE wrestler that's for sure yet Punk went and said The Pope sucked confounds me to why he said it.

    • Bigmike885 says:

well to be frank, Punk wrestled Pope when pope was still very green, and punk had been used to wrestling guys like Joe and Bryan, so i can see why he said it. Id be willing to bet if punk wrestled him now hed give a different answer.

      • Matt Hardy says:

The Pope was weird case. He looked like he had some technical ability, but he also frequently looked lost in the ring. Kind of similar to how Christian York looks in TNA right now, though with a different style. I can totally understand why Punk would think he was a bad opponent. There never seemed to be very much give, only the ability to take in most of Popes matches. There were a few times I thought he did not look safe either. He never quite upheld his end of the bargain as far as I am concerned with his push and it is no surprise to me that it came off flat. His gimmick was based on being a talker, and he was just average and robotic in that role, so as an average worker, that didn't leave a lot of room to work with. Then he just got lost in the shuffle because there were better guys than him who were doing better things while was on the shelf.

      • Philly_Cheese says:

Bigmake885 is right, in the ECW years Elijah Burke was known for being very green and a bit reckless. A few of his moves from ECW were dangerous and has since stopped using, or got significantly better at them. Although to be honest Elijah Burke wasn't known for being liked backstage in WWE due to his arrogance, which many in the industry have said in the past.

  7. soyfenomenal says:

Thank fucking God. No more of his "daddy" preacher thug bullshit polluting my ears.

  8. Warrior_86 says:

I didn't like his gimmick, but he definitely had potential. Good luck in the future!

  9. TnaCanada1 says:

its sad he won that lottery tornement a couple years ago. I thought he could have been a champ its sad that tna has money problems

  10. Jon says:

Addition by subtraction afaic. Was just never a guy I found entertaining for more than about 30 seconds.

  11. Firestormdzl says:

Pope is very skillful in my point of view, but for some reasons I don't really like his gimmick. My hope was that since he's on hiatus, he might make a return with a different gimmick.

  12. Roid Master says:

His promos sounded like he was doing a bad impression of The American Dream Dusty Rhodes. It was only a matter of time before he started using the term, "funky like a monkey".

  13. Tiffanydude says:

Poor Pope I really thought he was going to be big in TNA he had so mush potential, hope Sarita, Rosita, Gunner and others aren't next 🙁

    • TwIsTeD_EnEmY says:

Gunner signed a multi-year contract last year. He isn't going anywhere.
Cant say the same for Sarita and Rosita, they will likely be gone within a few months

      • Tiffanydude says:

Let's say a day and Cross out Sarita she is so far "released" I hope somehow she resigns and be in Ace's & Eights in some way shape or form she was my Favorite Knockout 🙁

  14. DJBIGCG says:

I wonder why the pope didn't resign with tna

  15. hangers says:

Shame creative couldnt have used him better. Wrong place wrong time maybe, if he joined a year earlier he'd have had more success..

    • Dante_Cross says:

He had loads of success in the beginning. Was very close to the World title, facing AJ Styles for it. He was injured though.

      • hangers says:

It seemed to coincide with H & B joining and the change in creative direction that went along with that. Everyone who was getting a push at that time seemed to have their run halted..

  16. TwIsTeD_EnEmY says:

Just yesterday I was wondering where he was.
Wish he had resigned, he was always pretty interesting, and i loved his entrance

  17. ViceyThaShizzle says:

I got to thinking it could be a swerve and he'll end up in A&8s. That would mean a serious change in character though.

    • tnadude says:

Unfortunately, he was taken out by Aces & 8s last time we saw him. Would love for you to be right, but it's a hard story line to tell…

D@mned shame if it's true, Pope was one of my favorites.

      • ViceyThaShizzle says:

Yes that is true, I guess they could say he wasn't really injured by A&8s and they planned it with him beforehand. 😀 The amount of swerves we've had with the storyline it wouldn't be too ludicrous.

  18. Leg Drop Jobber says:

While he COULD have great matches at times, he always seemed to be caught up in some horrible angle that prevented him from becoming a star (see the feud involving Devon and his children).

On the mic, he was nothing more than a Poor Man's Dusty Rhodes… "If you weeeeel…."
